The Cape Town Waterfront is South Africa’s most visited tourist attraction, with roughly 10 million visitors a year, it is widely acknowledged in Cape Town as the place to shop, as it epitomizes African Chic. It is also seen as the place to stay as the Cape Town Waterfront apartments are a very high standard. Many of the Cape Town Waterfront accommodation available is built around the canals of the working harbour, so guests can wake up to the call of seagulls and watch the ships enter and leave the working harbour from their balcony. The V&A Waterfront is named after Queen Victoria’s son Alfred, who began constructing the harbour in 1860, where much of the Waterfront accommodation is built today. He named the first basin after himself and the second basin after his mother.
The architecture of the harbour is a blend of Victorian maritime tradition and African design combined to achieve an aesthetic distinct to the Cape Town Waterfront. The mall consists of 400 stores selling everything from fashion, homeware, curios, leather goods and audiovisual equipment. All of the stores stay open until 9pm encouraging late night and after work shopping. It also offers 80 bars and restaurants catering for a range of tastes from fast food outlets to fine dining. The V&A Waterfront also offers year round arts and culture exhibitions, musical shows and performances that are often staged in the outdoor amphitheatre, to delight young and old.
